WESTMINSTER ABBEY

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey along with Westminster Palace ( now The Houses of Parliament ) were both built on Thorney Island. The river Tyburn that flowed to the Thames making the Island was eventually incorporated into the London sewer system.

Westminster Abbey is a historic church, renowned for its architectural grandeur and pivotal role in British history. It has served as the coronation church for English and British monarchs since 1066 with the crowning of William the Conqueror, there are two exceptions, the first was Edward V The boy King who was presumed murdered in The Tower of London before he could be crowned and Edward VIII who abdicated 11 months after succeeding his father and before the date set for his coronation.

The Abbey houses the tombs and memorials of numerous royalty and famous figures. The most visited is the grave of the “Unknown Solder” who represents all the solders of WW1 that died without identification, earth was brought back from a number of battle sites in France to use in the burial. The Abbey, a working church, continues to host significant national events, including coronations and royal weddings.
