TRAFALGAR SQUARE

1 MAY 1844

Trafalgar Square, Bronze Cannon, The Knowledge of London & Pigeons

Trafalgar Square is owned by King Charles 3rd and is the accepted centre of London, it is of great importance to Hackney Carriage Drivers as during the test “The Knowledge of London” they have to learn the streets and landmarks within a 6 mile radius of King Charles 1st statue. The test dates back to the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The Square used to be full of Pigeons and the public could buy a packet of seed from the stall that used to be there and feed them, the Pigeons are long gone now.

The Lions are still there although its rumoured that if Big Ben strikes 13 times then they will get up and leave. They are made of the captured bronze cannon from the French and Spanish ships that were defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The square is surrounded with interesting facts and landmarks, well worth a visit.
