Albert Gunter’s Story from Tower Bridge

In 1952 ex Army Tank Driver Albert Gunter had returned from WW2 to become a Transport for London Bus Driver.

Albert was on Tower Bridge Road heading northbound to Shoreditch driving his number 78 bus. He had just got onto Tower  Bridge when he felt his side move. Undeterred he carried on until he noticed that his side of the bridge started to raise. He was out of time, did he slam on the brakes skid and end up in the Thames, or does he go flat out and try and jump the gap, being an old campaigner he bit the bullet and floored it, with a gasp from his passengers he cleared the gap landing safely on the other side saving the lives of all onboard.

In 1997 the Spice Girls recreated Albert’s jump over Tower Bridge with posh spice successfully jumping the gap.
